Fun Foods for Kids and Grownups looks, on the outside, like an innocent recipe book, filled with ideas for cute, tasty and tempting little platters that children will enjoy making and eating. It also offers some good techniques for introducing the idea of healthy food such as being careful *never* to say, "This is good for you"!
In addition, it's a book about reclaiming something which, if we are not very careful, we in our busy, crazy, stressed-out culture are in danger of losing altogether. And that is the importance of food as pure, sensuous enjoyment, food as celebration, food as sacrament. Food is one of the most ancient of all vehicles for the giving and receiving of love, for sharing, and for the bonding together of families.
It is even, as these authors point out with some neat examples, a great vehicle for teaching our children all sorts of things about our wide and wonderful world.
I was amazed and appalled to learn, from a recently published survey, that there are many thousands of households, nowadays, where families never sit down at the table together for a home-cooked meal -- or in some cases, for any meal at all -- let alone cook and prepare meals together in the kitchen. Children are bombarded with propaganda from the food industry, brainwashed into believing that junk food is cool, and seduced into addiction by the sugar barons. And then we wonder why obesity levels are rising like never before.
But there are parents who care. And those parents -- and grandparents and anyone else who thinks seriously about health and nutrition and the quality of our children's food -- can take heart. The tide is about to turn. And books like this one, I hope and believe, are what will help to turn it.

"Fun Foods for Kids & Grownups is a superb parent-child interactive tool masquerading as a cookbook. From the creative story at the beginning to the last unique recipe, communication and sharing is emphasized. The recipes and instructions are clearly written and presented, eliminating guesswork and uncertainty. The result is a well-written book which helps the parent and child enjoy their time together in the kitchen. I enjoyed the copy that Linda donated for the contest so much that I bought a copy for a friend. If you have a kid or know someone who does, this book is a must-have."
